About Seollal (Korean New Year)
Seollal is the Korean Lunar New Year, the first day of the first lunar month, and lands between late January and mid-February. Korea observes a three-day public holiday (the day before, the day, and the day after); if any of those falls on a Sunday or another holiday, a substitute weekday is added.
Train tickets for the holiday go on sale about a month ahead through KTX/SRT lottery-style booking and sell out within hours; expressways are worst on the morning of the day before and the afternoon of the day after. Most shops and restaurants close on the day itself.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Seollal the same as Chinese New Year?
- Yes, both mark the first day of the same lunisolar calendar, so they fall on the same date.
